Dwadasha stothra 3 : Verse 4

Kundendu sanibham vande sudharasa sanibham vibhum

 Jnana mudra pushtakaadhi shankhakshayudha dharinam ||4||

This shloka in particular talks about hayagreeva roopa. It also throws light upon different roopas based on different ayudhas used.

Kund inda sanibham

Kunda – jasmine flower . Narayana has color like Jasmine. His color is attractive and pleasant.

Indu sanibham – like rays of moon. These illustrations are given to help us meditate on his form.

Sudharasa nibham –he is like flood of nectar

Vibhum – He is present like this in whole world

Aksha – Japa sara

Subhoda – Jnana mudre – always in right hand

In tantrasara sangraha , Acharyaru describes Hayagreeva roopa using following words

Turanga vadana – Horse like face, shashibimbha samstham – He stays in Chandra mandala, Chandra avadatham – his intensity is pure like that of moonlight 

Significance of Aadhi and ayudham in this shloka:

Aadhi signifies that instead of pustaka there might be other things in the hand.

  • Jnana mudre and abhaya mudre = Vedavyasa roopa, kapila, dattarareya roopa
  • chakra, shanka dhara = nrisimha roopa , gayatri roopa.
  • Chakra, gadhe, jnana mudre, shanka = Vamana roopa
  • Parashu = Parashurama
  • Jnana mudre, shrnga = rama = ” jnanam sharam (bow) cha dadham …….. sametham”
  • Shanka, chakra ,Vara, abhaya = Krishna roopa, Varaha roopa
  • Ayudha for Nrisimha roopa is also described as aridhara, shanka roopa, kaDaga, shrnga, gadhe, onake (musala), pasha, ankusha

This shloka also signifies the 50 roopas of bhagavantha which is equivalent to the number of aksharas from a to ksha. Sanyuktha askshara signifies sanyukta roopa which is nrisimha avatara. Each of these aksharas can be thought of as having been originated from one of the 8 letters of Omakara.

  • 1st letter – swaragaLu

  • 4th letter – Ta varga
  •  5th letter – Tha varga
  •   6th letter – Pa varga
  •   7th letter – ya ra la va

Ayudhas for all 50 roopas: shankha left upper hand, chakra upper right hand ,abhaya lower right hand, varada lower left hand  for 47 roopas

For remaining 3 roopas there is no abhaya hasta in lower right hand. They are ta kara, da kara , dha kara

  • Ta kara – tanki roopa – tanka means chisel
  •  Da kara – dandi roopa – danda
  •  Dha kara – Dhanvi roopa – dhanus

Hence this shloka tells about totally 60 roopas of Narayana.
