To see God first we have to sharpen/ clean heart like a sword. We use grindstone to sharpen a sword. Similarly to sharpen our heart we have to learn Vedas (shastras) which are like grindstones.
Shruti – Vedas, Shravana
nishAta – Sharp
nishAta+tamaiH – Very sharp
vimalaiH – Clean/sharp
sumanO – sattvic heart, Pure heart, manana
asibhi – With the sword, Remove all the weeds like kama, Krodha, moha from the heart.
dRuDam – Deep-rooted
Ashu nihatya dRuDam – Remove all unwanted deep-rooted things from the heart. To remove all these first we have to identify the home/ hiding place of these unwanted things. These enemies enter through indriya, then manasu and then buddhi.
Ashu – fast
balinaM nijavairiNam – Strong enemies deep-rooted in the heart – Ajnana, Kama, Krodha, Moha, Lobha etc. – Shadripu.
As Krishna says Kama and Krodha are the only two enemies. Infact desire is the primary enemy, which gives raise to anger. Where there is no desire there is no anger.
AtmatamO+bhidam – Narayana culls darkness inside if we try to get rid of Shadripu.
Abhidam – Narayana’s different roopas do not have any bheda
Bhidam+Isham – Upanishad calls Narayana as “Bhith – one who is the lord of all and hence is different from all”.” Bhidam – Bicchato harih”
Ananta – One who has infinite qualities in all kala, Desha
upeta harim – Surrender to such a Hari
This is addressed to the devotee:
Oh. Devotee, use with bravery the swords of pure knowledge and understanding which are sharpened by being engaged against the grindstones of the Vedas (Shastras) to cut through the powerful enemy of Ajnana covering over your own Swaroopa giving rise to evil such as Kama etc. Worship the eternal Lord Hari who is the Lord of all
